The 8th Annual Homeless Connect will take place Wednesday, January 30th, 2019, from 10AM to 3PM at the Salvation Army Community Center, located at 223 East Nora Avenue in Spokane. The purpose of the Connect is to address homelessness in greater Spokane by bringing together more than 50 service providers offering a wide variety of services under one roof for anyone experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. Last year’s event saw more than 300 attendees and expects to serve even more at the 2019 Connect.
Spokane 5th In Homelessness In Largely Urban Category
The timing of each year’s Connect is coordinated with the City of Spokane’s Community, Housing, and Human Services (CHHS) Office to coincide with the City’s annual “Point-In-Time” (PIT) Count of Spokane County’s homeless population. The complete results of the nation-wide 2018 PIT Count (taken last January) were reported last week in The 2018 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress and showed Spokane as 5th in the nation for the number of homeless in the geographic category of “Other Largely Urban.” Among states with the largest populations experiencing homelessness, Washington State was 5th with 22,304 people.
A Wide Variety Of Services Offered
Modeled after the San Francisco Homeless Connect, which started in 2004, the Spokane Homeless Connect is now celebrating its 8th year. Services available on-site during the event will include emergency shelter referrals, housing assistance, medical and dental screenings, ID restoration and DSHS benefits assistance, a “Warrant Fest” and much more. The annual event brings together volunteers and case workers from a wide variety of local non-profits and service providers who serve the common goal of ending homelessness.
Downtown Spokane Business Partnership Joins Growing List Of Connect Sponsors
Addressing and solving homelessness represents a genuine community challenge, and the annual Spokane Homeless Connect is made possible with Community support via sponsorships. The Planning Committee for the Connect is pleased to acknowledge the support of all our amazing sponsors, including Avista Foundation, and our newest sponsor, the Downtown Spokane Partnership Business Improvement District.

Spokane Homeless Connect Overview
Imagine being homeless, without transportation and trying to get to several appointments so you can apply for various services: a doctor’s appointment (because your health is declining), an appointment for food assistance and other services at DSHS, another appointment at SNAP to work on housing; your case worker at Catholic Charities also wants to meet with you; and you need to get to the Department of Licensing to replace your personal ID because it was stolen when someone stole your backpack (after all, you can’t apply for housing or a job without proper ID). And just to complicate matters, you also have an outstanding Warrant for your arrest because you missed a scheduled Court date on a misdemeanor trespassing charge. Now, imagine trying to get to all those appointments using only the bus, or walking. If everything works perfectly (and it seldom does), how many appointments could you get to in one day? Welcome to what it means to be homeless . . . on a good day. Now, imagine being able to have all of those appointments in a single day at one location with more than 50 service providers: an ID restoration specialist from the Department of Licensing who can help you get a new temporary ID; a housing specialist who can help you fill out an application because you now have a valid ID; representatives from WorkSource who can help you find a job; health care providers, social service agencies, food assistance providers, and a veterinarian to check your dog’s health. And remember that outstanding Warrant? Court representatives (judges, prosecutors and public defenders) are present in another room to review your situation and help you with a path forward (they can even have your Warrant “quashed” and set up a new Court date). Welcome to the annual Spokane Homeless Connect. Last year’s 2018 Homeless Connect featured 70 service providers who served more than 500 attendees. The 2019 Spokane Homeless Connect will take over the local Salvation Army facility on Wednesday, January 30, 2019.
The Spokane Homeless Connect is a subcommittee of the Spokane Homeless Coalition, a community Coalition of more than 800 individuals and 75+ agencies, ministries and churches serving the homeless and marginalized throughout Spokane County.
